President's Message

Winter 2012

Happy New Year and Holy Blizzards!

I hope your New Year has been safe amidst all the snow and freezing rain!

The Washington State WMEA convention is February 17-20. The WASTA dinner will be at Santiago’s Restau-rant, 111 E. Yakima Avenue, on Friday evening, 6:00 pm -7:30 pm. We will then have ample time to attend the 8 PM Concert Hour where the WASTA awards will be presented for outstanding High School Instructor, University Studio Instructor, and Private Studio Instructor. I look forward to supporting our colleagues and their ensembles.

Kudos to Myrnie van Kempen for arranging dinner reservations for up to forty people at Santiago’s restau-rant. Many thanks to Carol Pederson for her efforts in organizing this concert hour.
In closing, while the WASTA Board will have a brief meeting during dinner, it would help us all immensely if you would share questions or solutions regarding advocacy issues that you are having or will soon experience due to the on-going cuts in education budgets. We in WASTA are all in this together and will more likely succeed if we collaborate and are able to present an informed as well as a united front. While school boards and administrations often give lip service to the Arts, it has always amazed me that an activity that results in ap-plause is often the first to be cut. See you soon!

Sincerely,
Walter Schwede
